Finger pictures
Mike says I can't just post the pictures of my finger, I need to put them on a separate page so that people will only view them if they really want to. Hurrumph.

So here's the link: http://gorge.org/images/misc/2008/finger.shtml

Taken today (5 days after surgery) while I was replacing micropore, having inadvertently got the bandage wet again. I was snapping with my left hand and silently praising the lens image stabilisation. It was really tempting to draw a face on, but I thought I'd better not touch the area.

You can see how close I came to severing it, just a little bit of skin at the back that's still attached. I'm a bit concerned by the blackened bits, I hope that's just bruising rather than dying tissue.

Anyway if you wish to view, now you can.

I sent a text message to my mother as to whether she wanted me to send photos. She replied "Naturallement (Yes)."

More worryingly she has followed up with "Your father wonders whether there is anything of his which he could photo for you in return".

Ewwwww! Except for the last one, which looks like a shiny Christmas tree angel :-) I had been trying to imagine what had happened, and that is worse. Hope it gets better soon.

Sounds like Mike was right to insist I didn't just paste them in my journal then :(

I have the Dressing Clinic on Monday.

It doesn't really hurt, but the whole finger is very hot and the other fingers on that hand are fairly cold. I can type fine though (as you can see!)

Perhaps I will have to keep the bit of metal for a decoration. (Ew!)

Looks very much what I did to my left middle finger 25 years ago (always cut away from you, children!) My fingertip also went various funny colours but healed up fine and all there is now is a faint scar.

Thanks, that's reassuring (about the colours).

I don't care about scar, I'm not exactly proud, I just want my finger to work and to not have important sections missing.

Glad yours healed well (25 years ago? I would have been 7!) and I guess that means there's hope for mine to recover fully too, then.

Thanks for your comment - much appreciated. I am pretending not to worry but underneath I am quite concerned.

It's not too sore. Although I do knock it quite often and then it IS sore. I take codeine and ibuprofen as well as pregabalin regularly anyway which probably helps, along with the alcohol. ;-)

I keep stubbing it on stuff. You can tell, as it's followed by an "Ow" in a fed up tone. And I keep getting it wet. Well I do have fishtanks to clean, fuchsias to pot up, etc.

Mike just offered to help. I'm going to get him to pot up a basket tomorrow morning. Well, it's a useful skill to have... heh

I know that it's probably better for you to use the sling ... but if you're going to have to use your hand, would it help to get the largest size in re-usable washing up gloves, to wear on that hand while you're doing messy things? (I'm guessing your regular size gloves wouldn't fit over swelling and bandages...)

Doesn't help with knocking it, but will keep it dry/vaguely protected.

But of course offers of help must not be discouraged!

Washing up gloves are no good because I'm cack handed enough without losing sensitivity in my dominant hand! The thumb of a latex glove, cut off, applied (very like a condom, down to pinching the air out of the top!) and secured with a hairband, does the job.

Thing is, I can do things with my left hand and keep the right one out of the way, then find I've started using the right hand as well... or I go to just rinse a glass out, or another small everyday task that you do without thinking... Tasks that I think about, like cooking, are fine. I can put latex on along with apron!

Black areas look much like bruising/other trauma related artefacts. Does not appear suspicious, and finger appears (apart from the obvious damage) healthy/healing. According to photos, anyway.

It *looks* much worse/gory in small areas (fingers and toes) because there's a good blood supply but no big areas for such things to dissipate easily - hence some swelling. If it was your thigh, you'd probably have a bigger bruise for same amount of damage, because it had somewhere to spread and be visible. Heat in the finger, as long as it's not *burning* or looking streaky & white, is probably the normal inflammatory reaction & healing... Things look like they are progressing decently, I think.

I must admit that when you talked about photos not being safe for on here, I assumed it was photos from either before stitching, or during the surgery (somehow!). These are not bad.

However, I wonder what it is that your mother has in mind for your father to photograph? Does anything obvious come to mind - has he had similar things happen? Or was your mother just expressing herself a little strangely?

I agree, the photos aren't too bad - though possibly too much for Mike! I think we women have a stronger stomach when it comes to these things. I have been trying to count the stitches - one friend told me off for having not counted them in surgery as they were made!

Anyway - this blog is syndicated to a wider audience where LJ-cuts are not honoured - if I'd just put the photo in there, it would be in the face of a group of people who may not want to see it. Hence having to do it on my website. Ah well. I know what Mike's getting at - a load of geek men might not appreciate a close up of my injury staring them in the face. I notice that the commenters so far are mainly female.

Thanks so much for your remarks - very reassuring - long as it's healing that's good. And the bit at the back (around the 2mm of skin which remained attached) looks fine now - before, it didn't really look like a finger at all - so I'm sure that bit's ok, just the side and the nail that are black and hard to see.

Re my dad, well my mother is known for her funny jokes, ho ho. But my dad has been rather ill - possibly it was before I knew you - he has various issues which you may find me mentioning in friends only postings. He is now a very fetching shade of yellow.

Didn't you once need stitches in your forehead for a drinking related injury?

Haha - I started reading, thinking its your blog, of course you can show the pics if you like....then got to
"You can see how close I came to severing it, just a little bit of skin at the back that's still attached. I'm a bit concerned by the blackened bits, I hope that's just bruising rather than dying tissue."

And then thought eeeeew, actually, no! Thanks Mike!! :0) Hope it heals well.
