Help!
I have to get a present for my niece, who will be 5 next month.

(I also have to get one for my husband, who will be 35 next month, and that's even trickier!)

So, my niece likes princesses, pink, disney, and also quite likes ballerinas but is growing out of fairies.

Dressing up and videos are covered already, and she's the kind of kid who has got everything.

So... meep. I will get something online, so it's not going to match gifts she's getting from the high street. I am thinking about maybe a princess secrets box but I don't know how well she can write or whether that interests her. Pink Heaven looks like a great site but doesn't indicate the age ranges for each gift so I have no idea what's suitable. Maybe pink wellies that you decorate? But then I don't know her foot size.

Anyone with experience of children, please help!

How about a helium balloon in a box? They are ace presents for kids to get, and you can order them online. Or a voucher for the Buil A Bear workshop, they all love that place. http://www.buildabear.co.uk/shop/browsecategory.aspx?CallingPage=BrowseCategory&Category=Gift+Cards

Ah, trouble is that we ALWAYS turn up with helium balloons. There's a shop nearby.

I did tell the mother to keep the balloons as we can get them refilled for £1 but she didn't; we have stopped bringing balloons.

The bear thing is a really good idea though! Looks like there are two places within a 10km drive of where they live - I may well do that! Particularly as she will have loads of stuff to open on the day and the bears could create a different special day. What would be a suitable amount? (I have no idea, and money's not a problem, but I want to be appropriate!)

I thought you might have some good thoughts, thank you!

The bears start at about £12, and if she's the sort of kid who has everything, she'll already have one. So she can have fun spending her voucher on an outfit for her bear, or some accessories. A is currently saving up to buy roller skates for hers. The range of clothes and bear accessories is vast, you can buy handbags, glasses, mobile phones, even a wheelchair for a bear. I'd say about £15 would be plenty to get either a bear or stuff for an existing bear. It really is a mad place, A had her birthday party there (see icon) and the kids all love it, I suppose you're never too grown up for a bear.

That's cool - thanks! How old's A? I remember reading about the bear party.

ROLLER SKATES? It's another world, isn't it? I am completely detached from children, no ideas whatsoever as to what's age-appropriate.

I'm not sure what I was doing when I was five, apart from being pushed hard to read more and not to bite people so often. Playmobile I think. And I remember when I was a bit older I liked transformers (Robots in Disguise!) And reading.

Anyway, re the bears - I note they also do puppies. Aunty Flash might not mind going there in that case...

Just wanted to say prices may vary - the one in Reading you couldn't get stuff for less than about £20 ... but bears are a good idea :)

Thank you (and good to hear from you, I saw your other comment, hope you're ok!)

We are going with the bear (apparently she hasn't got one and mum thinks it's a great plan) and we thought about £30 as online most bears are £18 and many outfits are £12.

What a rip off! ;-)

Mum says that H hasn't got a bear but it's a great idea. So thank you! We will buy a gift card for about £30 (bear plus outfit).

We are going to be dragged along when she chooses her bear at a later date, apparently...!

That sounds like something that would be lots of fun for practically any kid! Sounds like Aunty Flash will be pretty popular...

My suggestions often _do_ involve books no matter whether the kid can read or not... as shared reading is cool too. Books on tape/CD...

But this sounds rather excellent, sounds like you're probably sorted!

I've been told not to get books. She does have a huge bookcase stacked full...
