that's the way (ahuh ahuh) I like it...
It's a year since [info]aardvark179 told me about Last.fm. I've found it very interesting to go back and analyse my listening habits - it seems there are two stand out bands and the rest are in little groups below that.

Looking at the list, can anyone recommend some more artists I might enjoy? Are there any glaring omissions?

1400+ listens: Nine Inch Nails
800+ : Pink Floyd
400-500: Leonard Cohen, a-ha, Michael Hutchence
300-400: Jean-Michel Jarre, Paradise Lost, Placebo, Nick Cave, Fischerspooner, James Taylor, Peter Gabriel, Depeche Mode
200-300: Counting Crows, Pendulum, U2, Blur, Robbie Williams, The Cure, Marilyn Manson, Del Amitri, Bloc Party, Supertramp
150-200: Howard Jones, Paul Weller, Joy Division, Sigur Ros, Billy Joel, Rachid Taha, Psychedelic Furs, Enigma, Then Jerico, John Lennon, Amadou & Mariam, Guns n Roses, John Williams
100-150: Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, Japan, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Jarvis Cocker, Genesis, New Model Army, London Symphony Orchestra (Handel's Messiah), Pulp, ELO, Moby, Sinead O'Connor, Rhydian, Yngwie Malmsteen, INXS, Morten Harket

Full list here.

Apart from the top two, the rest are interesting - some are much higher ranked than I would have thought, and others that I really like don't get as many plays as they deserve. I suppose that many of them make easy listening while I'm working, whereas Jeff Buckley and Gary Numan need more attention.

Suggestions welcome, it's time I discovered something new!

We shouldn't have to recommend stuff, last.fm should happily play you stuff from your musical neighbours which you haven't heard before.

having said that you might like Barry Adamson (try As Above, So Below or Back To The Cat), was part of the Bad Seeds before going off and doing his own thing.

If you like Enigma then you might want to check out Delerium (try Karma), and if you like Marilyn Manson as well then you might want to try Front Line Assembly (which spawned Delerium but is much more Industrial) - try Epitaph or Artificial Soldier as a relatively light introduction.

Thanks! I rate your recommendations (well, I love Fischerspooner anyway) although Nick Cave is misleading - I like two of his albums, and also a bit of Boys Next Door and the duet with Kylie of course, but I don't like all his albums, nor Birthday Party or Grinderman stuff. But I will look up all that you have told me!

I don't really rate last.fm's recommendations, mainly because I keep forgetting my password and it doesn't keep me logged in so I don't see them when reviewing my stats, but actually it either suggests bands I already have in my collection but don't happen to listen to / enjoy very much (e.g. at the moment it suggests Blancmange, Tears for Fears, Yes and Duran Duran) or artists that I can't find out much about and it seems nobody's ever heard of! Those smaller artists also seem not to be available from my favourite Ukranian MP3 store...

What I really want are more of the "OMG I can't believe nobody's ever told me about them before! Where have I been!" kinda things, or bands who were dull and hence below my radar, but have suddenly come good on their most recent album - that sort of thing.

I think the best recommendations come from people who know you or know your taste. For example I am automatically recommended Queen because I like ELO, but I cannot ABIDE Queen - and many people who have discussed music with me will know this already, but might have a better alternative.
